Best Gear for All Weather Running

November 2, 2023

Running is a year round activity as long as you are prepared. Discover how to prepare for running in all weather and tips that will keep you comfortable.

Best Gear For Your All Weather Running

If you wait until the weather is perfect to go for a run, you’ll probably spend a lot of time waiting around. Instead, use all weather running gear to help you stay comfortable and keep training whether it’s hot, cold, wet, or windy. Discover the benefits of investing in all weather running gear and what to look for when purchasing clothes, shoes, and other items.

What is all weather running gear?

All weather running gear is clothing, shoes, and other apparel that help keep you comfortable when the weather is less than ideal. That means breathable clothes that keep you cool in hot conditions, insulated clothing for cold conditions, and fast-drying clothes to keep you drier longer.

Another way to talk about all weather clothing is to say thermo-regulating clothing, or clothing that helps regulate your body temperature against the outside forces. These items aren’t just for your comfort; they can help you train longer and harder as well.

Benefits of all weather clothing

The most obvious benefit of all weather running gear is that it’s more comfortable. It’s simply more pleasant to not be too hot, not too cold, and not too wet. But that comfort translates into real room for taking your training to the next level.

When you’re not comfortable in your run, there’s an increased chance you’ll decide to skip it for the day. Skipping one day makes it easier to skip another and more difficult to get back in the swing of a regular training program. If you know that you’ll be comfortable in your running clothes, you’re more likely to keep pushing yourself when the weather isn’t wonderful.

Beyond talking yourself into it, keeping your body at a comfortable temperature while running also has real physiological effects on your performance. When the body gets outside of its preferred temperature zone, all bodily systems start to suffer and that will increase performance and potentially your health.

Instead, start with all weather clothing to keep yourself safe and working at your best capabilities in order to get the most out of your training and keep on the schedule you’ve set for yourself.

What to look for in all weather clothing and running gear

Clothing designed for protection in hot or cold weather will have certain features that work with your body to help keep you performing your best. These include waterproofing, fast-drying material, insulated fabrics, and ventilation.

  • Waterproof - Running in wet or rainy conditions makes it difficult to perform at your peak performance. A seam-sealed jacket like the ACCELERATE™ WATERPROOF 2.0 will keep wind and water out while still allowing your body’s steam to exit, helping you stay at just the perfect temperature. Another thing to look for in waterproof clothing is pockets for a phone, wallet, and other important items that need to stay dry while running.
  • Fast Drying - Sweat is supposed to help us regulate our body temperature, but it’s uncomfortable in the heat and can cause us to lose too much body temperature in cold weather. Fast-drying material is important in both cases to keep the body regulated by moving moisture away and not holding wetness to the skin.
  • Insulated - Insulation is often associated with keeping things warm against cold weather, but it’s also important for keeping your body cool in the heat. In most cases, warm and cold weather insulation is made of different fabrics and weights. When it comes to running gear, insulated items need to also be non-constricting and give you a full range of movement, unlike the standard bulky winter gear. The THERMOPOLIS(™) WINTER HALF-ZIP is made of a heavyweight fabric to keep you nice and warm, but it also allows you to move and run like normal. THERMOPOLIS(™) TIGHTs are a mid-weight fabric that retains heat.
  • Ventilation - Breathable fabric allows air to circulate against your skin. This works hand in hand with fast drying fabric in warm weather to keep you cool by circulating more air. This is especially important for clothes that fit tightly to the skin, which are preferred for running to allow you a full range of motion.
