Canadian PR Visa Overview

A PR status can be granted to an individual for a period of five years. It is a multi-entry visa based on the education, work experience, language proficiency and a few other factors. The PR visa is generally processed within the time frame of six to nine months and under this visa the candidate can live and work anywhere in Canada. To keep your permanent resident status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years. These 730 days don’t need to be continuous. Furthermore, after staying in Canada for a period of three years, the candidate can apply for a Canadian citizenship.

Benefits of Canadian Permanent Residency

The Canadian Permanent Residency status is offered to a candidate for a period of five years and in these five years the candidate enjoys rights similar to those of the full Canadian Citizen.

Some of the benefits of the Canadian PR status are listed below:

  • Free education for your children below the age of 18 years
  • All permanent residents are eligible for free health insurance.
  • Spouse can work full time
  • Can be eligible for Canadian Citizenship after 3 years of residency
  • It is a family visa – spouse and children also get Permanent Residency status
  • Access to high quality education and life.
  • One is free to work, study or do a business in Canada

Express Entry Program

The most popular and fastest way to apply for a Canadian PR Visa is through the Express Entry Program. It was started by the Government of Canada in January, 2015 and is the fastest mode of applying for Canada Permanent Residency (PR) Status in which the process time is 9 to 12 months. The Express Entry program requires a minimum of 67 points to become eligible and the total points accrued by the candidate are calculated based on their information.

Major six factors on which 67 points are calculated are following:

  1. Age – Although there is no age limit to settle in Canada, maximum points are allocated to those who are in the age group of 18 to 35 years. (Maximum points 12)
  2. Education – Educational qualifications at par with the Canadian Education Board establish that you will be able to support yourself and your family after moving to Canada. Therefore, a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent diploma or Post-Graduation degree from a recognized university is necessary. ( Maximum points 25 )
  3. Work experience – Canada is fervent in inviting applications from skilled professionals through the Federal Skilled Workers program and the Federal Skilled Traders program. Hence, it is advantageous if you have work experience in occupations targeted by the Canadian Provinces. ( Max points 15)
  4. Language proficiency – Canada has two official languages – French and English. Proficiency in both these languages is an added advantage. Otherwise, knowledge of English is a must for Indian immigrants and all other Immigrants, not only for professional reasons but also for day to day communication. For this purpose, IELTS and CLB tests are conducted, both are recognized by the IRCC where 6 bands in each module is the minimum eligibility. Niyama's in house trainer is CELTA certified and will assist you in your preparation of achieving the recommended 8-7-7-7 bands or the required IELTS scores. ( Maximum points given for IELTS are 24 and for French language (TEF) are 4 points.
  5. Adaptability – If either you or your spouse has a blood relative in Canada then you are awarded extra points for adaptability. (Max points 10)
    - If secondary applicant/spouse also scores CLB 5 in IELTS is awarded 5 points.
  6. Job offer – If you have an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) approved job offer from Canada, then that gives you extra 10 points. (Max points 10)
